PIV Lasers: Laser Diode Pulsing Systems for Particle Image Velocimetry

The laser diode pulsing systems (LD-PS) manufactured by OPTOLUTION are powerful and cost-effective illumination sources for Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). They generate bright and very thin light sheets with user-selectable pulse spacing and pulse length, offering unmatched flexibility. Furthemore, they are very compact and extremely easy to use. The high brightness is achieved by toggling (arrays of) high-power laser diodes using a special laser driver circuit. We offer optical peak power outputs of 500 mW, 5 W, 20 W, 40 W and 400W. The systems can be used for measurements in air or water, with pulse frequencies of up to 500 kHz.

Our full PIV solutions, including the LD-PS light sources, are designed and built by OPTOLUTION in Loerrach, Germany.

The OPTOLUTION synchronizer can be directly attached to the laser sources. The system can be set up very easily using radio control in PIVlab. Several cameras are supported in PIVlab. But the laser can also accept TTL pulses from a third-party synchronizer. Light sheet optics are included.

The settings of the OPTOLUTION synchronizer are changed wirelessly (USB radio dongle included) – directly from PIVlab. The very compact LD-PS is actively air-cooled by two fans and has a very small average power consumption.

The most important advantage over continuous wave lasers is that frame straddling can be enabled, allowing to capture higher velocity events using very low interframe time (down to 10 µs interframe time is possible). Duty cycles up to 50% are possible (10% with the 400 W laser)

Pulse Adjustment and Synchronization: The Most Versatile PIV Laser

As opposed to traditional PIV light sources, the pulse frequency and pulse duration of the OPTOLUTION LD-PS PIV lasers can be adjusted to meet different experimental needs. The laser modules can be used with our synchronizer, or with a third-party pulse generator. The modules can operate up to 50% duty cycle, and with a pulse repetition of up to 500 kHz. The minimum pulse length is 2 μs. All our laser modules come with integrated sheet optics that allow to focus the light sheet (0.7 – 1 mm thickness). The laser modules are equipped with the required key switch and interlock input.

Pulse timing and pulse length are controlled from PIVlab. Pulse length is given in percent of the interframe time.
