OptiXplorer – Optics Educational Kit

OptiXplorer

The OptiXplorer is a comprehensive pedagogical platform designed for both foundational and sophisticated laboratory studies in optical physics. The kit centers on a HOLOEYE LC2012 Spatial Light Modulator (SLM), which utilizes a transmissive twisted-nematic LC display with XGA resolution. Alongside the SLM, the package includes a laser source (650nm), rotatable polarizers, and the necessary optomechanical hardware.

Through six specialized experimental modules, students can explore complex phenomena such as Fourier Optics, polarization, and both phase and amplitude modulation. The hardware is supported by a robust software suite capable of generating computer-generated holograms (CGHs), conducting interferometric phase analysis, and automating diffraction measurements.

Experiment Modes

  • AMP (Amplitude Modulation): Uses the SLM as a dynamic image generator to build a simple projector. It covers polarization characteristics, basic imaging laws, and the measurement of image magnification and contrast.

  • JON (Jones Matrix): Determines the SLM’s Jones matrix components to calculate LC cell birefringence, twist, and director orientation. It uses multi-wavelength or grey-level measurements to resolve numerical ambiguities.

  • LIN (Linear Gratings): Investigates the SLM as a diffraction grating to derive geometrical parameters. Students evaluate 1D and 2D gratings as beam-splitters, comparing measured diffraction efficiencies to theoretical predictions.

  • RON (Ronchi Gratings): Derives phase modulation by analyzing Ronchi gratings with variable grey-level contrast. This module includes automated LabVIEW™ measurements to optimize polarizer orientation for maximum phase shift.

  • CGH (Computer-Generated Holograms): Utilizes the IFTA algorithm to generate dynamic lenses, prisms, and holograms. It introduces Fourier optics and ABCD matrices to study signal positioning and the spatial separation of undiffracted light.

  • INT (Interferometry): Employs a two-beam interferometer and CCD camera to measure phase modulation through fringe-shift analysis. It features both manual principles and automated measurements via the PhaseCam software.
